The long-awaited Ken Buchanan documentary complete in 2023, The Boxer from Somewhere Else: The Ken Buchanan Story, and is finally set for release following a remarkable journey of persistence, creativity, and personal resilience from its director, Jamie Steedman.
Originally conceived in the late 2000s, the film’s development was paused in 2016 when Steedman chose to focus on his personal life and career. After becoming engaged to his long-term partner Eva, he placed the project on the back burner while building a successful career in London’s production industry, quickly gaining recognition as a highly skilled and sought-after motion graphic designer.
Tragedy struck in 2022 and 2023, with the sudden loss of both his father and brother. These events reshaped Steedman’s perspective on life and reignited his determination to complete the film. “If you want to do something in life, you should do it regardless of the possibility of failure,” he reflected, acknowledging the urgency of pursuing his vision while there was still time.
Armed with his expertise in motion design, Steedman reimagined the project from the ground up. He removed much of the original archive footage and replaced it with his own illustrations, artwork, and animation—blending documentary storytelling with a fresh, creative aesthetic. The result is a new cut of the film that is both visually distinctive and deeply personal.
By summer 2024, this version was completed, and distribution company AJAMAX Productions stepped in to bring the film to audiences. The release marks the culmination of a 15-year labour of love and ensures that the story of Ken Buchanan—Scotland’s legendary lightweight champion—receives the cinematic recognition it deserves.
